Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such treatments should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
