Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Police report they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located numerous other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were working "to resolve the case" and have asked to the public for details.
An important political figure stated the incident made him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, recalling the death of nine people by a assailant targeting individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
