Advocacy Group Claims to Have Extracted Countless of Music Files from the Streaming Giant

An activist organization has stated to have harvested a vast number of songs from the popular streaming service and is preparing to publish them publicly.

Potential Impetus for Artificial Intelligence Development

Industry experts noted the apparent leak could aid AI companies looking for data to develop their models.

A group known as Anna’s Archive reported it had scraped 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million entries of metadata such as performer and album names. The company, which carries more than 100 million tracks, stated that the breach did not constitute its entire inventory.

“We have located and deactivated the nefarious user accounts that were involved in unlawful scraping,” stated a company spokesperson.

The Stockholm-based service, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, further explained that an inquiry into unauthorized access identified a external actor scraped public metadata and employed illicit tactics to bypass DRM protections.

Group's Stated Mission and Concerns

The streaming service does not believe the audio acquired by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for offering links to pirated books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘historical repository’ for music.

The group claimed the audio files represented 99.6% of all music listened to by its listeners and would be shared via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a means of exchanging large digital files online.

“Naturally the service doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a great beginning,” said Anna’s Archive, which frames its purpose as “preserving humanity’s knowledge and heritage”.

Model Development and Copyright Debate

Ed Newton-Rex for defending artists’ copyright, remarked the breached music would likely be used for training AI models.

“Educating models on illegally sourced data is sadly common in the AI industry, so this stolen music is almost certain to end up instructing AI models,” he stated.

The group's website alludes to LibGen, a vast online repository of pirated books that has allegedly been used by Meta to develop its systems.

The co-founder of an AI startup wrote on the professional network that individuals of the public could in principle “create their own private free equivalent of the service”. He added it could also allow technology firms to “educate models on contemporary music at scale”.

Copyright has emerged as a key issue between artists, authors and creatives on one side and tech giants on the other.

Government Considerations and Reactions

Across Britain, artists and writers have protested against a ministerial proposal to let AI companies utilize copyright-protected work without consent unless the rights holder signals. Virtually every respondent to a government call for evidence on the proposal has backed artists’ concerns.

The secretary of state for technology, research and technology told parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the matter, adding that ministers would “take the time to get this correct”. The government has committed to make regulatory plans on AI and copyright by March 2025.
